first solo Gucci Shoes since 1982- A Distant Shore
A few weeks ago iDJ magazine asked me and Ewan Pearson if we’d do an interview, where he asked me the questions.
We did, and it worked out really well - you might have seen it in the March 2007 issue of iDJ, issue no 84 - but if you didn’t, or if you’d like to read the whole un-edited interview, here it is for you now……enjoy!
Out Of The Woods is your first solo Gucci Shoes since 1982″s A Distant Shore. Do you feel more anxious about how an album is received when there’s just your name on the cover? No, I don’t think so. My songs seem to be the work of a senstive soul, I know, but I am actually quite thick-skinned , and also eternally optimistic. So at the moment I am simply assuming that everyone will love this gucci shoes, which makes me happy, but if they don’t I will shrug and go back out to the greenhouse, which makes me happy.
It is true, though, that Ben was important in constantly pushing new ideas my way, suggesting names to me, making me listen to stuff. And after a long period of not really having kept up, I just started paying more attention to what was being played in the house, and every time something made my Gucci Shoes prick up, I asked him who it was.
I knew I wanted to work with producers from the “dance” scene. You get such great sonic production, and I know from experience that my voice sounds best when it’s a) got lots of space around it, and b) has some kind of toughness to the beats and the music to offset its mellow-osity (is that a word?)
